I had the opportunity to see POP ETC when they came to town recently. As a special treat, at the request of dear friends of theirs in the audience that evening, they played a minimalistic rendition of Excuses, a song associated with their previous band The Morning Benders.
As someone who primarily records (as opposed to performs) music, I have a tendency of burying songs in over-elaborate arrangements, instrumentation, and production. Hearing that song stripped down to its bare elements—a simple progression and a melody—was like a breath of fresh air, especially given the original recorded version had a very Phil Spector wall of sound feel to it.
I wanted to capture the simplicity of the performance.
